Ilford’s own Hussain Manawer announced his forthcoming ‘Homemade’ poetry cycle with the release of the first track ‘The White Rose’ live from the launch at Twitter HQ. Comprised of 4 poems in total, ‘Homemade’ finds the poet and metal health activist working his way through his personal grief following the death of his mother last year.
‘The White Rose’ (the English translation for his late mother’s name, Nasreen) is a beautiful tribute, displaying Hussain’s trademark skill with language over the a sparse piano arrangement.
Hosted by award winning blogger The Slumflower, the night saw support from writer & social entrepreneur Meggan Roxanne followed by an introduction to Hussain from Bruce Daisley the VP of Twitter Europe.
“This is the biggest piece of my heart, I was actually in such a bad place when I wrote this. I was missing and still am missing my mum immensely on a day to day basis” Hussain explains. “Poetry really helped me and I really just hope 'The White Rose' is able to provide people with some form of comfort when going through such a difficult thing.”
Hussain is a unique character in the UK’s musical landscape. He’s an accomplished poet who has opened the stage for the likes of Ellie Goulding, as well as headlined sold-out shows across London.
He’s also a passionate campaigner for mental health awareness, having set the Guinness world record for the world’s largest mental health lesson, and is also a proud ambassador of Samaritans, committed to their vision of fewer people dying by suicide.
He’s performed at Brixton Academy with the Global Citizen initiative (sharing the stage with Former UN Secretary General Kofi Anan) and recently made appearances on Radio 4 and Sky News, discussing his poetry and dealing with grief.
